Off-Season UAN Storage: How Your Own Tank Farm Pays for Itself in One Season

Every spring, the same story repeats itself. The field is ready, the fertilizer application window is ten days, but the UAN has to be hauled 200 km from the plant, where twenty trucks are already waiting ahead of you. At that moment, the price per tonne is also at its highest for the year.

The problem is not logistics. The problem is that the farm has nowhere to store fertilizer, so it is forced to buy when everyone else is buying.

What “buying in season” really costs

The price difference for UAN between the low season and the peak application period is traditionally significant—that is why traders offer early-delivery programs. But the losses are not limited to the direct price premium.

They also include costs that are usually left out of the calculation:

  • equipment downtime while waiting for fertilizer after the agronomic window has already opened;
  • extra trips by tank trucks and trailers between the field and the plant instead of productive field work;
  • lost yield when application is delayed by 5–10 days;
  • dependence on plant dispatches, which are governed by the plant’s schedule—not yours—during peak season.

A farm with its own reserve simply does not take part in this race.

Why a metal tank is not always the answer

The classic solution is a stationary tank farm made of metal vessels. It works, but the initial investment is disproportionate to the task for most medium-sized farms:

UAN-32 is aggressive toward metal. Corrosion products enter the liquid and then reach the sprayer nozzles. This interaction does not occur in a PVC flexible tank: no sediment forms, crystallization does not occur, and the liquid remains free of rust and foreign particles.

PVC or TPU: how to choose the material

This is the most common question, and the answer depends entirely on what you plan to store.

PVC is the standard material for UAN-32, liquid compound fertilizers, and process water. It is corrosion-resistant, proven through years of operation, and popular capacities are always kept in stock.

TPU is used where requirements are stricter:

  • petroleum products—oil, diesel, and gasoline; the material operates at temperatures down to −60 °C;
  • drinking water—TPU is approved for food-contact use and does not alter the composition of the water.

Choosing the wrong material is expensive, so an engineer selects it for the specific liquid before the cost is calculated.

What capacity to choose

The logic is simple: the tank should cover the requirement for one application wave, not the entire year. Calculate it based on the field area, application rate, and number of treatments within the working window.

In practice, three standard capacities are most common: 50, 100, and 250 m³. They cover most requests and are always in stock, so they can be shipped immediately. If a non-standard capacity is required, it is manufactured to order—the range extends to 4,000 m³, and several tanks can be combined into a complete tank farm.

A practical tip: two 100 m³ tanks are often more convenient than one 200 m³ tank. They give you flexibility—you can store different liquids, place the tanks at separate sites, or fold one away during the off-season.

Reliability under a full load

A flexible tank operates under the pressure of its own liquid column, and the critical point is the seam. GidroBak tanks use the patented TCS triple-seam technology, which reinforces the points exposed to the highest loads.

The second element is engineering calculation. Loads are calculated individually using a proprietary formula based on the required capacity, the type of liquid, and the characteristics of the site, so the tank retains its shape and does not spread under a full load.

The result is backed by a 5-year warranty and a service life of up to 10 years. Some tank farms installed early in the company’s history have now been operating for ten years without repairs.

  1. Site visit. Measurements, assessment of the terrain and soil type, and material selection. Free of charge.
  2. Engineering calculation. A commercial proposal with capacity and load calculations.
  3. Design. A customized technical solution at the price of a standard one.
  4. Manufacturing and installation. Production, site preparation, and turnkey installation.
  5. Technical support. Documentation, warranty, and service throughout operation.

For standard capacities, the entire process takes only a matter of days because the manufacturing stage is skipped—the tank is already in stock.

Payback example

A farm in the Chernihiv region installed a 250 m³ tank for UAN-32 and switched to off-season purchasing. Savings from the price difference amounted to 15% of its fertilizer budget, and the tank paid for itself in four months.

The same economics apply to fuel. Setting up a 50 m³ mobile fueling station directly in the field reduced refueling trips and saved 40,000 litres of fuel during the harvest season.

A flexible tank does not improve agronomy. It does something else: it gives the farm control over its schedule and purchase price. You buy fertilizer when the price is favorable and apply it when the field needs it—not when the plant is able to dispatch it.
